Exploring Language Contact Influences on Vietnamese Use among English Majors at Nghe An University

Abstract

This study analyzes the impact of language contact on the Vietnamese language practices of English majors at Nghe An University in the context of global integration. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative surveys (124 students) and qualitative interviews to examine how language contact influences students’ use of Vietnamese in daily communication. Findings reveal that students frequently mix English with Vietnamese in academic settings and on social media; lexical borrowing and creative online language use are widespread, reflecting the strong influence of language contact. The study proposes strategies to safeguard Vietnamese in the era of globalization through bilingual education policies, reinforcement of linguistic norms, and encouragement for students to simultaneously develop foreign language competence while preserving the purity and cultural value of Vietnamese.
